IMHO the biggest potential impact for FOSS would be by enabling
teachers and students to develop and administer their own applications
and systems

i was hired on my first development job based on my Spectrum BASIC
experience (good old visual basic)

i developed most of the advanced skills (from which i've enjoyed a
good living) from collective open source development at Apache

and there are plenty of opportunities out there for people with the
rights IT skills
