-------
In October 2008 Manchester Free Software had a talk¹ on the recently
released OpenMoko's Neo FreeRunner (aka GTA02)². This was an attempt to
bring freedom to the smart phone / pocket computer not only in the
software but also in the hardware. Now in 2012, building on this work, a
seller of the Neo FreeRunner has built the OpenPheonux (aka GTA04). This
has much improved hardware and community involvement. They are on the
brink of a doing a larger run, known as the Group Tour³, to get the
prices down but need more people to sign up to it.
The talk will include the journey from the OpenMoko's Neo FreeRunner
(aka GTA02) to the OpenPheonux (aka GTA04), demo'ing of various
distributions running on the OpenPheonux, the current state of the
project, 3D printing, the future of free hardware and much more!
The event will include a Q&A session, discussion and then lively debate
in the pub afterwards.
