1. Re: Software Freedom Day 2013 - Saturday September 21st
At last year's event we had about 120 visitors of all ages, but with a
pleasing number of young families. Here are some thoughts about how it
went.
1) Activities that went down well included:
* Scratch workshop to design a game (lesson plan from Code Club)
* Arduino workshop with a variety of projects to try (run by Garry Bulmer)
* Raspberry Pi room - half a dozen Pis for visitors to try
* Arduino-based drum kit
* Music creation with MIDI instruments
* Large Twitter wall scrolling SFD tweets from around the world
* Assortment of general access Ubuntu machines for visitors to check out
* Linux users and developers from credativ and OpusVL (two Rugby-based
FOSS business consultancies) on-hand to answer questions and
demonstrate software
* Coverage in local press
* Great venue with plenty of space and rooms for specific activities
* Refreshments - hot food and drinks
* Several planning meetings in preceding months
* Preinstallation of machines by a local school's ICT club
* SFD T-shirts for volunteers sponsored by credativ, OpusVL and
Sunfield Technologies
2) Activities that could be improved:
* At future events we'd also have a screen at the entrance with a map
of activities
* lanyards/namebadges prepared well in advance
* Setting up the venue completely the day(s) before the event. Even
having only a few setup tasks to do on the day can eat into valuable
time.
* Getting the word out even earlier
* Using the event to launch other events/schemes that run through the year
* Getting more local schools to attend - we've been surprised at how
little interest there has been to date from them
Cheers,
Nick
