I'd just add that sources are by no means limited to authorities and
official data hierarchies. There are also huge opportunities for
grassroots and crowd-sourced open data, e.g. through Internet of
Things applications such as the Japanese radiation map and Air Quality

In particular where there may be reason to not trust official data...
Although the issues surrounding copyright (e.g. who owns environment
data collected by a device in a shared space), privacy and licensing
can quickly get quite thorny!
