Interesting!  They are certainly good at plain language, and it's
great to see best practice stated in plain language. Thanks Paul for
pointing us to it.

More than almost anyone else, Dropbox's business depends on users
being able to trust cloud storage -- any stampede away from them and
it's game over.  So this is that rare case where the best interests of
the business and of the consumers coincide, and here's the result,
which is nice.

Having said that, they know, and we know, that the "authorities" have
plenty of other options, if they want some particular information
badly enough.  But this disincentivises mass surveillance, and that's
always a good thing.
