[Bradford] Help please: Command line client wanted for XMPP/Jabber

I have an XMPP server running.  Communication  works well between a desktop GUI and an Jabber app on my Android phone.
However, what I want is to run a client, on a headless server, that will be 'on-line', and be seen to be 'on line', all the time. I need to be able to interface with this client, so as to receive messages, and thus be able to pass them onto another application.Sending is also desirable but I have another method of doing that if needs be.
Any suggestions?
