Hi Nick

Have you tried http://www.system-rescue-cd.org/? If not, I would try 
that before anything else, especially if it is off a Windows machine. NB 
System Rescue looks but does not touch unless you specifically tell it 
to - so it is very safe to use and will not cause any more damage by 
looking.
