Cheap RAID cards have serious drawbacks (imho). Better to go software raid, from a known (documented) config on a non-RAID /boot & / partition, so if you lose not just a disk, but the RAID card, you can be back up again easily. If others have thoughts on this, I'd be interested to hear. - Richard From simonw at gbitsystems.co.uk Mon Dec 10 10:27:26 2007 From: simonw at gbitsystems.co.uk (Simon Willett) Date: Mon, 10 Dec 2007 10:27:26 -0000 Subject: [Chester LUG] SATA RAID - Re: Good Morning In-Reply-To: <1197242964.5887.58.camel@GNU-Mac-II.bradwall> Message-ID: <20071210102302.0EAE5236B9@gbitsystems.co.uk> Hi Richard, It's interesting what you say. Of course the raid card itself is a single point of failure. I have software raid already in the box this new server will be replacing. I presumed that software raid would be slower?!? First the good news for you (bad for me!). I regret you won't have to put up with me on Thursday. I've already been booked elsewhere. And many thanks for the offer to set up a server at 'my' charity. However, they have decided to stick with Gates and are installing a Windozy Server 2003 R2 Enterprise. However, in this season of good will, and in the spirit of depriving Gates of a few coppers, I am asking if any of you have any boxes which came with MS Windozy 98 through to Windozy XP Home, and are now not using Windozy on them (or even just a CD set of Windozy). I have found that approved charities can get MS software cheap from Gates (like £4 for XP Pro) if you can quote an old system authorisation code which is now not being used. I'm not sure how they check the old systems are not being used, or even if they do check, but I suspect they have ways. I enquired about upgrading from Vista Home to XP and was told that this 'downgrade' was not possible under the scheme, only from Vista Business and Vista Ultimate. Anyway if anyone can stomach writing down a Windozy Authorisation Code or two, I would be most grateful. Enjoy Thursday, and a Happy Christmas and a Good New Year to you all - Roger.
