From smedley358 at btinternet.com Thu Apr 2 14:51:24 2009 From: smedley358 at btinternet.com (Richard Smedley) Date: Thu, 02 Apr 2009 14:51:24 -0000 Subject: [Chester LUG] NW Hackspace Message-ID: <1238683872.3626.562.camel@GNUpad> Hackspace - a place for hacking. Playful invention with hardware, from Arduino to 3D printers. As one of the hackspaces puts it: "We're looking to create a hackerspace where anyone interested in technology, or digital or electronic art can meet, socialise and collaborate." There are hackspaces all over the world [1], and now the UK. A new group [2] is trying to set up hackspaces in London [3] & Birmingham [4]. Why not the North West you ask? Well, I asked anyway ;) - so now we have a NW group - come and join the mailing list [5]. WHERE? Members of Liverpool LUG have expressed an interest, and want to tie it in with planned workshops & the local arduino community. In Manchester the local coworking group are interested in sharing the space. In Stockport we're looking at a storey of a nice mill building [6], and hoping to find a community of people to join in. In Bangor there's a social enterprise start-up that would integrate very well with the space. JOIN IN If you're in N Wales or NW England, and interested in creative, fun (or profitable) things to do with computers, or would like to link such things with social action, perhaps, join the list. These things will only work with *people* - I'm committing a little time to help get these off the ground, but it'll only work if we all muck in. WHAT NEXT? If you just want to follow what's happening follow us on Twitter [7], sign up & lurk on the Google Group, or wait until we set up an [announce] mailing list. We may try and meet in their media lab at some time, but we'll start with the bar. Adrian McEwan will bring along Bubblino (as seen on BBC ;) to the first meeting. Format will be informal discussion after a short intro on hackspaces. One reason for choosing this coming Wednesday is that it follows straight on from the Small Steps to Sustainability meeting on Creative Learning [1] - something that very much includes having fun in a hackerspace. I hope that some people will find themselves staying on from Small Steps for the Hackspace Meeting (or coming early to the HS meeting, to take part in Small Steps). Note that Birmingham hackspace combine regular pub meetings with occasional weekend hackdays. Help us find a venue and we'll be doing the same. Unfortunately although I would very much like to meet you I am not able to attend your Thursday meeting as I am learning Italian on these nights until June. A little history, I have used Windows for some time, though I was a reluctant convert from Atari and before that Commodor. Now I want to break free from Micro Soft and support the free software community and experiment a little. We still have a Windows system which my wife uses mostly. My main needs apart from exploring Linux are for digital photography, music, podcasts (I have an iPod) and internet and email etc I have managed to install Opensuse 11.1 on a Computer I have rebuilt with mostly new components, but this was not my first choice distro! I wanted either or both Linux Mint or Ubuntu but have not been able to install even though both work from a live disk. The installation seems to stall at step 4 formating the hard drive. I just get the busy cursor and thats it, I have left the machine running for hours with this but only once after an over night run did I get to step 5 and then that stalled with the same symptoms. I've tried it on a new drive which I partisioned using Ubuntu's partisioning app from the live DVD, on a drive with Suse and on another new drive. I've tried manual as well as the other options. So after many attempts I am baffled, particularly as Suse installed with no problems what so ever and very quickly. I've just googled and it gave this http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=778820 which seems to be similar but he didn't get any responses. You could try downloading http://www.dban.org/ and doing a quick disk wipe to make sure your disk is clean before retrying. Have you tried installing from the command line, i.e. not from the live CD screen. This page may be helpful https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation and this page https://help.ubuntu.com/community/forum/installation/Partitioning mentions a program called TestDisk which may help. I'm sure we will be able to help with most problems you might have transferring to Linux. Your problem with installing Ubuntu and Mint is a strange one but as both distributions are based on Debian, I wonder if it's something you would get with all Debian-based distros. I've heard similar stories with some hardware in the past. Hopefully the new Ubuntu release might help you out with more hardware support. It would seem to be some problem with the motherboard and the hard disk controllers not being supported to me but I'm not a hardware guru, that's just a hunch. You could try the alternative installer CD or even the 64 bit versions of Ubuntu. The alternative install is aimed at people with these sorts of hardware problems I think. http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/downloadmirrors#alternate Let us know how you get on and I'm sure we can get it working somehow. I am down loading Ubuntu 9.4 and will also down load the 64 bit version. I read today on the Ubuntu Hard Ware compatibility site that ASUS P5QL PRO mother boards do seem to have a HD driver problem but that there may be ways round it. So if not too technical I could have a go. As for installing from the command line That might be a step too far until I can learn more about how to do it or if it comes with a idiot guide. Will keep you informed of my progress as I make any! Thanks again Richard 2009/4/27 Dan Lynch Just wanted to echo everyone else in saying welcome to the group Richard, nice to have you aboard. It leads you through prompting for information the same, it just does it in a text screen rather than a GUI. If you can use the normal installer you'll be able to use the alternative without a problem one I reckon. Might be worth a go. If it's a HDD driver problem I'm not sure it'll help. The text based installer is great for machines with graphics card issues. Once installed, some things work that wouldn't work on the LiveCD, it's strange but often does the trick. I used to find that ubuntu could handle the normal vga but had problems with the nvidia card until the drivers were in place. If you can bypass your card until you've installed, then click on the restricted drivers icon near the top, install the drivers then reconnect the card, it might make a difference. It might not, but then again it might.
