Have you checked on the laptop to establish whether it's maxing out the 
memory and CPU?

Have you tried copying a large file from the server to the laptop whilst 
measuring the speed? Is the performance acceptable? With a database the 
work load is more likely small non-sequential reads but a large file 
will be a reasonable test to start with.

Which operating system is the laptop running? and how is it connecting 
to the storage holding the database? SMB? NFS? iSCSI?

You say database - do you know what kind? Is it possible to see whether 
appropriate indexes have been defined? Working with the application 
vendor to ensure that these are operating correctly may give a large 
speed increase. If it's possible to switch from a file based database to 
a server based one that might also help. Also which application is this?
