If no talk is organised then we will usually organise a “open stage” for people to discuss projects, current news, or just to rant. Main Talk We do not have a talk organised for this month, unless someone is willing to give one on last minute notice. Open Stage The stage will be opened for anyone to pimp their current projects or give a short talk about any subject. Doors are usually open before 7:00pm if people want to meet up in the centre, The Liverpool Social Centre is two doors up from Forbidden Planet and is the right-hand door at the front of “News From Nowhere”. Check the window for a handy Liverpool LUG sign, which will indicate we are there and not still at the pub. Press the white doorbell for access (the one marked basement) and someone will come up and open the door for you. After any talks are finished will usually stay in the meeting area until 8:00pm then head out to a local pub, depending on recommendations of the night it maybe The Welkin at the bottom of Lord Street, or another pub in the local area. We are still trying to organise a stable, quiet place to go to after the events of the night. Tech Meet I've managed to book a room at the Uni for the last Thursday of this month (29th) so we can have a tech meet instead of the regular pub meet. I hope everyone is happy with that. We've got a few topics already, but any other ideas you have please let me know. 2. O'Reilly books Like some other LUGs I've managed to register the Chester LUG with the O'Reilly user group programme. This enables us to request review copies of books providing we publish our reviews on public sites / blogs. A review section to the site maybe?! The more useful benefit to us all is that we can get 35% discount on ALL O'Reilly books plus free postage. I'll bring along the info at the next meet, but please give me a shout if you want to buy anything sooner. 3. Day trip :-) We've mentioned the idea of organising LUG trips and the other night I saw the national computing museum at Bletchley Park on the tv. It's still in the early stages of being set up, but I just wondered if anyone else fancied a trip to Bletchley Park as there's plenty of other things to see. I've checked the trains and it only takes 1hr 40 to get down there, so it's easily doable without making it a very long day. I'm thinking a Saturday for this. Please let me know your thoughts / feedback to any of the above. Les -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I don't have any topics to add I'm afraid. It's been a mad couple of months and things have conspired to keep me from attending a meeting. I really hope to make this one. The weekend before is Lugradio Live and Oggcamp so I'm gonna be really busy there, hopefully things will calm down by the Thursday. It's a shame it's not earlier in the week or I could bring another Linux Outlaw with me, he flies back to Germany on Wednesday though. Never mind. The O'Reilly book thing is cool, nice work Les! I saw LivLUG had done it but didn't even know about the program before that. Reviews would be excellent. The day trip thing also sounds cool and if we could find a weekend that works for everyone I'd be interested. See you all at the tech meet if not before in Wolverhampton. Talk ------ This month's talk will be given by Micheal Sparks from the Kamaelia project. Kamaelia[1] is a free software Python-based systems-development tool and concurrency framework originally developed by BBC Research & Development and subsequently released to the community. Micheal Sparks[2] has been using GNU/Linux for over 12 years and has been contributing to various free software projects in varying levels for much of that time. Micheal guides and leads the Kamaelia project and will be explaining what it is and how it works. Location ---------- The meeting will take place at the usual time, 7pm, at the Lass O'Gowrie pub on Charles Street in Central Manchester. We will be located in the Salmon Room upstairs, although there will be people around a little earlier downstairs(probably sampling the food and drinks on offer). Just ask at the bar if you can't find us. Their website[3] has full details of how to get there and the fine selection of food and drink available. The venue also provides wifi. Workshop Reminder ----------------- Manchester Free Software are planning to hold regular workshops in a similar vein to our current monthly talks. Our first workshop, entitled "Future Planning", is due to take place at 19:00 on Wednesday 21st October 2009 at Manchester Digital Development Agency[4]. More Information --------------- General information about Manchester Free Software meetings can be found on our website[5]. Please pass it on! ==== It's back! Manchester will be celebrating the release of Ubuntu 9.10, Karmic Koala with a release party. The event will be at the Pitcher & Piano on Deansgate Locks from 6pm until late on Friday 30th October. That's the day after the official release. The party is free to attend and no sign up is necessary. There will be free wifi and expect people to have ISOs of Ubuntu 9.10 (and Kubuntu, etc) available. The Pitcher & Piano is a public house, so unfortunately under 18s will not be admitted after 7pm and anyone fortunate enough to look under 25 should bring ID. The Ubuntu 9.04 release party attracted over 60 people. Lets make this one even better! I have some bad news, I don't think I can make it. I'm feeling pretty ill after 3 days of round the clock work/partying at LugRadio Live and Oggcamp this weekend. It hasn't helped me fighting my cold either I suspect. This rock and roll lifestyle, it's a tough job but somebody has to do it. I'm really sorry I have to drop out again. I've missed the last couple of meets and I keep promising myself I'll make the next one. I must try harder next month. I hope it goes really well and also hope to see some photos or information on the site later perhaps. If no talk is organised then we will usually organise a “open stage” for people to discuss projects, current news, or just to rant. Main Talk This month, depending on the time, we may have two talks. Simon Johnson will be giving his flying talk on building computers from scratch, from the logic gates upwards. In addition, Andrew Williams will be giving a quick talk on contributing to open source projects, what are the pitfalls and why even non-programmers should give their time to a project. Open Stage As per usual, time will be allocated to the end of the talk for anyone to give a five minute talk on any subject. If you want some time just drop me a mail or grab me on the day. This month we're sharing the location with a book group, so be aware if someone strange opens the door for you. Ask for the Linux group and you should be OK. After any talks are finished will usually stay in the meeting area until 8:00pm then head out to a local pub, The pub varies from month to month and usually depends on the size of the crowd. If you arrive late and unsure of where we are then give one of the contacts a ring. For more details, see: http://www.wrexham-lug.org/index.php?page=meetings I've never been before, as I am new to Wrexham, and the meetings only happen once every two months, but am hoping to make it to this meeting.
