Activities directed at "including" more people in the use of digital technology are predicated on the assumption that such inclusion is invariably a good thing.  It appears so, when judged solely by immediate practical convenience.  However, if we also judge in terms of human rights, whether digital inclusion is good or bad depends on what kind of digital world we are to be included in.  If we wish to work towards digital inclusion as a goal, it behooves us to make sure it is the good kind. The lecture will also cover hot topics, such as the impact of recent projects such as Wikileaks, on the global digital world and wider audiences. Due to restrictions on accommodation size, registration for this event is essential, please register online to attend. The event is open to all. *** For more details and registration visit the IET Lancs & Cumbria website page for this event at: http://www.theiet.org/local/uk/northwest/lancs-cumbria/freedigitalsocietyMarch2011.cfm *** From stuart.james.burns at gmail.com Wed Feb 16 09:08:55 2011 From: stuart.james.burns at gmail.com (Stuart Burns) Date: Wed, 16 Feb 2011 09:08:55 -0000 Subject: [Chester LUG] Solaris 10 admin and advanced admin course books Message-ID: Hi Everyone. However where it's useful is sometimes you need the screen real estate and not having your software keyboard taking up the whole screen is useful. Other than that the reasons I didn't go for the Desire HD were the following:- 1. although it has a bigger screen the resolution is just the same. 2. Spare batteries are obligatory with any smart phone but I heard the HD was particular bad for battery. 3. It doesn't have an optical track pad which I find critical for navigating around clumsy web forms. On the plus side the HD does seem to have a fast chip and I have noticed the occasional sluggishness on the Z. Overall I'm pretty happy with the Z. Interestingly when I was looking around the Bog standard "Desire" was more expensive than the Z sim free. That's still a very good phone. I also looked at a few other phones but I'd previously had a HTC hero and didn't want to give up the pinch zoom which comes with HTC Sense UI Cheers, Dave. > > On 18/02/2011 16:15, David Holden wrote: >> >> On 18/02/11 15:58, Stuart Burns wrote: >>> Tell me about it. Ebooks can be good. If you want an entertaining read, try the "How to own an identity, how to own the network and how to own a continent" A very very very good read in one long story with substories, ifyswim. Better than just dry texts. It shows how trivial things can be attack vectors, using social engineering, web security etc. It actually walks you through interesting topics including how to do an sql injection attack, in story form. If you are up on the HB Gary incident, it walks through very similar scenarios, blow by blow. You get the idea its a very good read ? Only downside is the cost £35ish per book (3 books in series) It is written by true blackhacks, including Jeff Moss, Thor et all. If you want a copy I know where you can get electronic copies v cheap ;) Drop me a line ;) Apart from that, cool websites include "Krebs on Security", the old fave slashdot.org, pauldotcom.com, wired.com/threatlevel to name but a few :) I could find more in my bookmarks if you really want. There are also 20 to 30 monitor stands getting thrown out. I can save either from the skip (the shorter the notice the better for the monitor stands). The Enterprise 4500s is interesting. Its got several slots into which you can plug either CPU, memory or disk boards. It probably sucks down too much power to be sensibly used as an everyday server but it'd certainly be reasonable for somebody who wants a solaris machine to play with.
