Further to our discussion last night, I activated both 2d and 3d (I tried just 3d first) graphics acceleration.  The most it would let me have was 128MB.  Aero themes are still off (although I could get the aero wallpaper options), there are no transparent options.  Plus I heard that direct X 8/9 is a no-no.

Any further ideas?
