From dan at danlynch.org Mon Apr 1 21:14:39 2013 From: dan at danlynch.org (Dan Lynch) Date: Mon, 01 Apr 2013 21:14:39 -0000 Subject: [Chester LUG] Fwd: LIVLUG APRIL MEETING - WEDS 3RD @ 7PM In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: *KEY DETAILS:* *Location:* Liverpool Social Centre, Bold Street. *Date/Time:* 7pm, Wednesday April 3rd. Greetings all, There was no feedback regarding a talk for this month so that being the case we should probably have a social meet/open forum. We'll get together in LSC and if anyone wants to give an impromptu talk or perhaps tell us about a cool project they're very welcome. We can retire to the Shipping Forecast pub later to continue our discussion as usual. It might be a good idea to make an upgrade plan for those Ubuntu machines we're supposed to maintain in LSC. I just saw that support for Ubuntu 10.04 on the desktop ends on May 9th this year. Something to discuss. Come along and say hello. Particularly if you've never been before. We're a very friendly and informal group. Everyone is welcome and there is no level of technical expertise required, which is just as well in my case. If you have trouble finding us please drop me an email, I'll be checking on the phone throughout the night. Hope to see some of you there, Dan -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I imagine some of the group have never seen any database stuff in the slightest, so would be good exposure. My talk above could have a little bit of this, as part of Rails is the ActiveRecord ORM. I needn't go into Rails as one can use it directly, and of course database programming is a wholly different talk that I'm certainly not the person to give. How about I code my demo in such a way it can "just" use the database you create? In return I'll demo basic Git & GitHub, since you can commit etc. to GitHub-hosted repositories using just the GH website? I like the idea of lightening talks, it's a great way for everyone to talk about something without feeling pressured to put together a fancy presentation. I'd really love the idea of a permanent location we could use like the hackspaces. Some places work a subscription model that pays for a location, I've also heard of some who've found a charity with a spare room. In exchange for a bit of IT support, the group has been given the use of a room. That's a nice idea as it also gives the group projects to do for the charity, so keep a eye out for any needy charities with spare rooms! Whilst I work on a date for the first tech talk, it's worth mentioning that I've arranged an OpenStack event (with thanks to Michael Crilly) down in Bangor for the 8th May. I know it's a bit of a drive, but if any of you are interested in going 'cloud', then OpenStack is definitely the way to go. It's an open standard and lets you move providers or even run your own cloud easily. The day will include an introduction to the technology, a demonstration of how to set up your own private cloud for free and a technical deep dive. The event is free and lunch is provided! If you are interested, you can find out more and register at: http://softwarealliancewales.com/?page=2013_05_08_openstack_cloud_computing_Bangor&lg=eng Thanks Les -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Just behind Aldi on the entrance to Tesco. It's not grand and it's not that big but... I have had a chat with the owner and for a link to his website from the LUG website we can hold evening hack events here. I think we could fit 6 in comfort 8 at a push (more with sanding room only) but a few may have to balance laptops on laps. There is a large reception we could use too if we had to stretch out. I even have access to a projector and a large white wall ! Only catch is that I have to be there ! So it will take a bit of careful planning. I have never had much experience at using linux as a multi-user environment, all the fun of typing 'who' and actually finding someone else on the machine for once!.. then wondering how to work together in that environment, 'mail' , 'mutt' even the oh so 1970's 'talk user at localhost' command. Perhaps creating a shared folder where the permission actually work ? Learn to use a few command line tools along the way. I'm sure there is lots to learn and because it's just the "pi" we can all be administrators and have fun breaking it. The best thing is I didn't have to actually do very much to make this project 'live' so it's out of the gadget draw and hooked up to the office network. Is anyone up for having a play ?
