No, not time for your tax return don't worry. It's the first Wednesday of the month and that means... LivLUG is upon us! Our August Linux User Group meeting will take place on Wednesday 7th from 7pm in the usual location: Liverpool Social Centre, underneath News >From Nowhere bookshop on Bold St. We don't have a talk planned at the moment but if you have any ideas you'd like to present or discuss please feel free to let us know here on the list, or just bring them along. I'll do a quick talk about the upcoming OggCamp in October. What it means, how you can get involved, etc. Most of you have been to OggCamp so might already know all about it. I'll try and be more proactive with booking talks as we head out of the lean summer months and back into the autumn. I know it's been quite lax of late. If you have any requests or suggestions please let us know. Any questions or queries you can post to the list or ping me directly via: dan at danlynch.org Hope to see some of you on Wednesday :) Dan -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Although I have used Linux for some years now I am still very much a newbie in abilities. I live very close to the Rake and Pikel and would love to drop in sometime but Thursday evenings are not always good for me. I wonder if anyone from the LUG group could help me with my netbook problem. I posted on the Mint Forums and got some pointers as indicated below: How to install Mint 15 Mate on Samsung NC110 without USB/DVD [image: Post] by *Nic Deane * on Mon Jul 29, 2013 7:22 am I run Mint 15 Cinnamon on my Inspiron 15 - have been using Mint now for some years [image: :)] . Last year, while visiting South Korea, I bought a Samsung NC 110P (Model code NT NC110 PSW) with a Korean keyboard - so I could I type in Korean easily. It came with Windows 7 Starter in Korean. I hoped I might be able to load Linux Mint but on opening the BIOS I discovered it has no option to boot into USB - it doesn't have a DVD drive. I've tried loading Mint on to a USB stick but, of course, that won't boot, either. I have used Mint4win and can run Mint 15 MATE within Windows and everything that I need seems to work. As far as I can see the hardware for a NC110 will run Mint 15 (MATE 32bit at least - I seem to have an accelerator problem for Cinnamon with this netbook). Is there any way of installing Mint as my main OS on this netbook and wiping Windows from the hard drive because Mint would then run much faster, wouldn't it? I no longer have Windows on my Inspiron [image: :)] . Any ideas? If any of the Korean friends can help me - that would be an added bonus! 누구나 저를 도와 주시면 감사하겠읍니다! Many thanks! Nic Deane Re: How to install Mint 15 Mate on Samsung NC110 without USB [image: Post] by *Bolle1961 * on Wed Jul 31, 2013 7:26 am Ok, 1 last shot [image: ] Plop boot manager, it seems that you can install it on your hard drive http://www.plop.at/en/bootmanager/full.html http://www.plop.at/en/bootmanager/download.html I also checked in the Tutorials and came across http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/171 describing How to install Mint with no USB/CD. I tried working through things as per the Tutorial but I've got a bit stuck and don't feel confident to go any further. I wonder if there was anyone who would be willing to give me a couple of hours - perhaps at the Rake and Pikel (I'll be glad to host refreshments!) - to get Mint installed properly on to my netbook. I can run Mint within Windoz but it is just a bit slower and I don't need (Korean) Windows 7 and so would be glad to ditch it from the netbook once Mint is up and running. My wife and I are leaving for the USA for a couple of weeks holiday on the 28th August and would like to take the netbook with me as my traveling computer. Is there any chance of a little help before then? Many thanks for your attention. Best wishes, Nic Deane -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I tried two ways of making the bootable USB, too, just in case I had messed /that/ up! I might have done that, of course, being a bit clueless but as far as I can see the only way with this little netbook is to go the route of a non-USB/DVD install. So far, there seem two ways to do that but I'm a bit fearful of doing that on my own. The problem seems to be that there doesn't seem to be any other option than the #1 SATA HDD as a booting option in the BIOS. But thanks, again, for your concern. That's why I've been looking at a non-USB/DVD booting procedure. I would drive over to you or Paul at some mutually convenient time and hopefully with one of the two routes I've found - and your experience - it should be possible to get rid of Windoz and just have Linux. As for Mint 14 / 15 I'm not upgrading to Mint 15. It's based on the latest Ubuntu, which is supported for 9 months as opposed to the previous norm of 18, meaning it expires before the previous version. The knock-on for us Mint users is that Mint 14 will outlast 15. I'll probably wait until 16 before I upgrade again. If you can get to Ellesmere Port at some point, I can see if it's possible to install to your machine, and even do the job for you. I had an e-mail from Steve Lilley this afternoon and dropped in on him as he was leaving work. He was BRILLIANT and very kind and saw through my problem quite quickly. In my BIOS there was a setting that went for quick booting and so skipped the options for USB booting. I hadn't seen that. Once that was disabled it did pick up my USB DVD drive and my problem was solved! I came home and just loaded Mint in and cleaned Windoz off the netbook completely. In fact I'm writing this from my Samsung netbook now, having installed Mint 15 Mate. I appreciate what you have just written about Mint 16 but I'm just so glad to be able to use this little netbook anyway. Thank you both for your kind concern which has been amazing. I hope to see you folks sometime after we're back from the USA. Best wishes - God bless, Nic On 12/08/13 17:26, Paul Williams wrote: > I keep a USB copy of Mint 14 KDE around for emergency reinstalls. > > As for Mint 14 / 15 I'm not upgrading to Mint 15. As you said, two sets of eyes are better than one. I just never thought of the quick boot option cutting out the USB boot option. I went straight home and loaded Mint onto the netbook and it works a treat - in fact I'm e-mailing you from the netbook (without Windoz!) I do hope I didn't delay you too much. It was so kind of you to give me that hour of your time. I hope to drop by with a little thank you to you in the next few days. Certainly the Linux fraternity is an amazing source of help. Again, thank you so much! Best wishes - God bless! Unfortunately Steve isn't available this week, so I'm going to check as there may be a chance that Mike will open up for us. If not, then it will be a meet at the Rake and Pikel. I'm currently waiting to see if we will be able to have a tech meet at Chester Storage. As soon as I hear I will email this list, so keep an eye on this list tomorrow. If we can't meet there, then it will be the Rake and Pikel. Les -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We will have to finish at 10pm, so if you could arrive between 7 / 7.30 that would be great. As always there will be hot and cold drinks available. Bring your laptops and a chair! See you all later. After the discussions on the different distros I've been looking back at what's around. Like many of us, the days of spending weeks trying out different distros are long gone as I just need a system to work. However I do sometimes wonder if I'm missing out on some great new distro. So I've come up with a suggestion that I think we can all benefit from. I found a good list of distros that not only includes the popular ones, but a big list of alternatives. My idea is if we all pick a different distro to try out and then at the next LUG meet we can all share our experiences. This way we get an assessment of a lot more distros than if we all tried to test them individually. If you're interested in doing this (we don't need large in-depth reviews, just whatever you can do), please take a look at the link below and email the list saying which distro you'd like to try. http://www.techradar.com/news/software/operating-systems/best-linux-distro-five-we-recommend-1090058 I'm planning to take a look at Qubes OS.
