Funnily enough my eldest, who's thinking of getting a Chromebook for college
(since shoulder-surfing them, after me reading this thread)...

... started off with no GUI at age 4, just Emacs (for writing stories), then the 

startx route to running the GUI too.

My youngest uses a netbook with appropriate GUI but was happy enough
learning HTML and CSS with ssh and nano as the initial tools (with me
occasionally "cheating" and changing to Emacs when I needed to get 

something done quickly my way).

Yeah, I mainly use it for lighter tasks or remote connections to other boxes. But as Stuart says, there's  an SD slot so I use a card for any larger files if necessary.
