Wirral & Ellesmere Port Linux User Group, 1st ever meet...

The
pub of the month (it might change in the future, but it'll do nicely
for the first meet) is Old Hall Farm. Meet at 7pm on Monday 18th March.

http://www.oldhallfarmpub.co.uk/

It's located next to KFC, opposite Sainsburys. It's about 100 yards from the Cheshire Oakes junction of the M53.

The have ample parking and do 2-for-1 pub meals if anyone wants a bite to eat. Not sure about Wifi...

Hope to see some people there... Remember, check @WEP_LUG on twitter for updates. Ta.

Thanks Stuart. I am looking at the third Monday of the Month. This way I'll keep it pretty much inbetween the ChesterLUG and LivLUG dates. I'm looking at Monday since there's little point starting a LUG that I can't attend. I initially thought of starting in April, but might just have to start this month so that we keep any initial momentum going.

The last part is a venue. If there's one thing the port has it's pubs. I'm sure I can find one pub initially to have a meet up at. After that I can work on finding a more permanent venue when I know the level of interest.

As for the issue of the area we can "service", there used to be a Wirral LUG and a Runcorn LUG. Both seem to have disappeared. I don't know the reasons behind that. Hopefully the absence of those LUGs will leave a gap in the market!

(At this point I'm trying to recollect what I wrote since the message didn't send and only the half above is stored in my drafts folder. Grrr...)

I'll try and source an initial meet point (aka pub) tomorrow, before Dan and Pete (tdtrs have promised a shoutout as well) go on air.

Thanks for the pointers Stuart. Keep it up. The more people think of, the less that can creep up on me.

Cheers

Hi,

Interesting concept. Just a thought or two though. The reason Chester moved around quite a lot was due to issues with venue. It may be an idea to source a venue ahead of time (ie before Dan goes to air) just so people have some idea where it is going to be, times, locations, parking. Also, if you take out those in chester, liverpool and those closer to them, i'm not sure how many that leaves.

Anyhow, just my 2ps worth.

Regards

Stuart

Hi Paul,

I agree that WEP LUG is much nicer than E-Plug. I like the name. It links to computers as you say and that can't be bad for publicity.

I'm happy to mention it on the podcast and forward this to LivLUG mailing list of course. I'll send this email to my LO inbox so I remember it for the next show. Probably Monday night. I just followed your Twitter account as well :)

If I can make it along some time I will, but I can't make any promises yet until I know when meetings are and how my calendar looks.

Best of luck with the launch!

Dan

Hi Dan.

With the WEP thing, I thought of that. I was initially going to have an Ellesmere Port LUG, but E-Plug? Sounds like an energy save device. I'd rather at least be linked to computers!

There was a Wirral LUG and a Runcorn LUG. Both seem to be dead, or at least their sites are.

I was going to contact you today. Is there any chance of getting a plug in Linux Outlaws and with the LivLUG crowd? It's the Twitter account I need plugging as it's the public facing part, at least for the time being.

The address is @WEP_LUG (all capitals, and you need to say the underscore or you'll get someone else's site.

If you could, that'd be great.

If it gets moving, you are of course welcome to pop by anytime

Cheers.

Hi Paul,

I wish you the best of luck with WEP LUG. It sounds like a cool idea. I know someone started a Runcorn LUG in the not too distant past but I don't know if it's still going now. It's a very good idea to avoid clashing with more established LUGs like Chester and Liverpool I'd say. I fear you may struggle to get the numbers initially but it takes time to build up, so don't be disheartened.

I can't help thinking people will mention wireless security (or lack of it) every time you say WEP though. "I prefer WPA2 LUG myself". Maybe it's just me who would feel the need to repeat that joke every time :P

Best wishes,

Dan

Hi there people, it's Paul Williams here.

Thanks to Les for sorting out my new account for the Chester LUG.

Since tonight's meet, I've been setting up the groundwork for the Wirral & Ellesmere Port LUG.

To those who might wonder why I'm doing this...

Firstly there isn't a LUG in ellesmere port. Or if there is, it's the quietest one I know of.

Secondly, I'm finding the Chester one increasingly difficult to attend. An 18 mile round trip in an increasingly unreliable car on a day where I have 2 things happening in the evening already is a recipe for disaster.

So I'm looking to start a new LUG nearer to home, on a Monday night in the middle of the month, so it's not too close in time to either Chester or Liverpool's LUG meets.

I've started work on some methods of reaching out to prospective members. So far...

There is a locked G+ community for LUG members only. This area is private to keep things secure. Someone will only be able to view and post when they're members.

There is now a Twitter account. This is obviously public facing. Here I can post messages about LUG events and people can tweet me to ask their questions.

This is obviously very new, but I ask if anyone is interested to either message me here or on G+ or Twitter, and if possible follow the twitter account and pass details for the twitter feed to anyone who might want to come along to a meet.

The twitter account is:

@WEP_LUG

All upper case and don't forget the underscore or you'll get some company selling plugs. They beat me to the account without the underscore, unfortunately.

Thanks guys.
