Because from feedback from Mike, it seems clear that this was not the 
only problem and it's a new / clean install and it seemed the surest way 
to get it right. Doesn't take long, really. This is a test installation 
on a spare hard drive, not on one of my working installations.

I did have a good look to see if 'nautilus' was there  --  it wasn't!

Have now done re-install and all seems OK.

Strange really -- never had this sort of thing with SuSE (  -- ducks 
quickly to avoid flame throwers)
