It's not ideal, but as a community product which doesn't generate any
direct revenue, it's still good of them to give each release a year
(which is a lot of work with each release getting larger). Red Hat
aren't daft; they did a lot of research and found that the vast
majority of users were running software less than a year old anyway.

That's true, it is overkill in many cases, but Red Hat are preparing a
smaller and cheaper version of their server distro.

You make some valid points, but I'm not so sure about that! Which of
the BSDs offer ANY kinda support schemes -- at least anything better
than Red Hat? Sure, you can probably find a few guys here and there
offering support, or pay Wasabi if you're on NetBSD, but switching to
a BSD won't eliminate this problem.
