Substitute WWW for IRC and you have the same argument... Guess you won't
be surfing anymore then, eh Ian?

IRC (or any other tool) is what you make it. Yes, the people you
describe do make use of IRC, but there is nothing forcing you to use the
same channels as those people, and there are devices in place to prevent
those people from using your channel(s) if you wish to implement them.

IRC is a very useful tool, and one that the LUG is going to make use of.
If you do not wish to use it then that is obviously your choice - it's
just your reasoning that I disagree with.
