You're habit of a) replying to several threads in one email and b)
replying to a thread in another thread is quite distracting. Anyway...

I'd pretty much reached that conclusion already. After all, what's the
point of creating something to be used if people can't use it?

I'm halfway between the two - I'm a great believer in code/component
reuse and building blocks, but not making a square peg fit a round hole.
I'm writing my application because a) there's nothing else I can find
that does everything I want, b) I have particular views about how things
should be done (in particular web 'standards'), and c) because I want
to... :)
In theory, I could take a couple of OSS projects and merge/link them,
but it wouldn't provide the level of integration I want, and in most of
the cases certainly wouldn't satisfy b) above.

I would be interested in a joint/LUG project. I'll do a brief write-up
on what I'm planning later tonight... Some of the 'goals' you mentioned
could be handled by my system as well...

Perhaps this is something the we could do as a LUG - I will be evicted
from my current online 'home' shortly, along with Adam Pigg and Mat
Brunt (who piggy-back off me). Having experienced the heady heights of
having full root access to a box, I don't really want to go back to
managed hosting. If the LUG were to lease a dedicated server, would
people be interested in chipping in? It could certainly host your SASRA
site, and I might be able to sell some hosting as well - esp. to the
other people who are using my current server. All of these would make it
cheaper for us LUG'ers.
Cheers,
