[cumbria_lug] New Lad installing problems

Hi I've just joined Cumbria LUG and have played with linux for a while 
but still think its a black art.
I've used Suse for a while but find it frustrating, Schuwk recommended 
Ubuntu which I,ve loaded up.
But.
I like watching DVDs on my box and cannot, as it hasn't got Win codecs 
or descrambler included.
I've attempted to load the required rpms, but do not seem to be able to 
install them.
I cannot see away to load other software off cds.
Ive got Suse up and running ok with films etc.

Can anyone please shed some light on this simple problem.
