I've finally got this sorted.

Thanks to all who offered advice.  As it happens it turns out that it
was all my fault some time ago.  At some point my 64-bit box seems to
have had 32-bit Hardy put on it and although that worked fine, Intrepid
doesn't.

Now reloaded from a 64-bit disc.
