Rosie,

I've had similar problems with Kernel upgrades on Hardy for the past few
months (although the more recent ones have worked again.

For me, it was a problem with compiz - something to do with the graphics
drivers I guess. Turning compiz off fixed it. I can't remember exactly
how I did it from text mode though, sorry.
