iptables -L should show any firewall rules running.

Regarding your question about distros, you cant easily convert one
distro to another, its usually better to do a fresh install, there can
be subtle differences in the layout of the filesystem between distros,
and very big differences between the versions of software and packaging
systems used.=20
I like debian because you can type "apt-get install nmap", for example,
and it will grab a copy of nmap and any dependant packages from the net,
install it and, in some cases, offer a simple interface for
configuration of that package (debconf). People say the installation and
configuration of debian is a tough hurdle but the install guide at
debian.org is very good, and if you apt-get install discover read-edid &
mdetect it will have a good go at detecting and installing your devices
and configuring X.
At the end of the day its horses for courses, if you're happy with
mandrake stick with it. :)
