[Derry] Last DLUG meeting

Hey all,

Well, the first meeting of 2012 took place last Wednesday at the
Clarendon Bar in Derry. It was attended by Dan, Mark and myself...not
a huge crowd, but you've got to start somewhere...

We decided that we could aim for fortnightly meetings, alternating
Tuesdays and Wednesdays. That way people could miss a meet happily
enough without having to wait ages for the next one. So, next
get-together is on Tuesday 2012-06-19. I'll post a reminder on the
weekend!

We had a chat about Linux machines for developers. Dell have an
in-house project on this, with the XPS 13 as a starting point. It'll
be interesting to see where they go from here:

Google were giving a talk about their 3D maps while we were drinking
and chatting:

Mark was talking about different parental controls software and I
mentioned OpenDNS as worth investigating. Never mentioned its issues
with Akamai ;-)

Dan had brought a Motorola Xoom2 along and we tried it out. Mark has a
Ainol Novo 7 and I picked up an A1CS Fusion5 (before giving it to my
gf), so it was interesting to compare and see what the much more
expensive tablet had to offer. Not a lot more was the general opinion,
I'm afraid!

We had some idle speculation on how long it would take to install
Windows with Office and all updates, if you *really did* Read and
Understand all the license agreements you had to accept. I thought it
would be fun to try it out: obviously I'd had too many beers by this
point.

We also wondered what the use of QR codes was. I supposed it would be
a good way of distributing your public key, but probably only if
anyone other than techies used them...

So, that was it. Next week I'm hoping we'll have some more toys to try
out. Dan's expecting a Raspberry Pi at some point; which would be
nice!
