I've been using 7.3 for ages now, but I've recently been using Mandrake
7.1 on Sparc and 9.1 on Intel. I made the move really as a result of the
demo we got at the second last TLUG meeting.
And so far I'm very impressed by Mandrake. However, due to Mandrakes
naming convention it caused me some confusion when trying to tweak stuff
using the CLI. So I relented and I installes the GUI. Getting it to work
on a shitty 1MB card meant that I had to make the XF86Config file by hand,
but even then it was looking up it's own ar*e when I ran it.
Mind you I fixed this by buying a new PCI video card a TNT2 M64 32Mb and
jeez what a difference that made. The GUI I have to admin is rather nice
when viewed in 1152x864x24bpp, having said that I still needed to tweak
the CF86Config-4 file by hand to set the viewport.
Also, in the docs there are references to wizdrake, for doing basic
configuration of some of the services like SaMBa and LDAP but I can't find
this to save myself.
So it looks like it's going to be a Vi job again. But with all that said
I'm now a convert to mandrake and I won't be going back to RedHat. I've
still got one machine that's running it (this one) but that'll get binned
once I get the SaMBa / LDAP configured on the clunky old PowerEdge.
