Fortran, eh? Frankly I'd be tempted to make him use vi or emacs :).

I've only briefly looked on freshmeat but there only seemed to be one
free fortran IDE and didn't seem up to much. I'm afraid if you want an
IDE you'll probably have to splash the cash, emacs does offer most of
a typical IDE's abilities, you'll just need to get used to it's
interesting ways.  :)

/me heads off to install Debian, need OpenGL and FreeBSD's support isn't
quite there yet. :( Shame
