Remote mounting it would make the "minuturisation" of it less of a
problem and even then give you more of an option to incl. dash mounted
optical drives. Plus people in the long term would probably feel happier
about pulling a box to bits thats on the boot (say to add or replace
HDD) than tearing apart thier pretty dash.

This is definitley doable  - could be fun!
