It is a nice amalgamation of FreeBSD 4.4, Mach3.0 microkernal and 
Quartz window manager with Aqua interface. It also runs x11 and will 
compile many unix CLI or x programs. Everything apart from the 
windowing manager and interface is open source.

I thought about installing linux but have gotten quite cosy with OS X 
and decided to keep it. It is unix after all!
