My Redhat 9 box does the same with that syntax but is fine with the full 
pathname i.e
# /usr/sbin/sndconfig
are you saying other commands work ( or do not work) e.g. ifconfig lpq etc
or is it only the emulated sound in your system that you are 
concentrating on.
