Thanks One and All; I'm just a bit green behind the lugs (I
noticed that this list is at "lug.org" - quite
appropriate!)- I did not realise how close Linux was to
Unix (studied facets of UNIX at Durham in 1984 !!!!!); have
already done this type of thing via the terminal in Mac OS
X Panther.

Now I'm bogged down getting Postgresql to work.......
