Well the gedit thing is basically a no go for you because your not in a
graphic environment (i think the g part in gedit means gnome, and i know
thats not going work from a straight command line)
If your looking at a full screen text editor then really i would either
stick with vim, not that i know much about it but a lot of people on the
list can give you pointers, or nano. which is pretty easy to use.
So in answer to the command your originally said it would be
sudo nano /boot/grub/menu.lst
but i still can't work out why this would help you. The file to mount
partitions is stored in etc. so if it was your home folder or something
that wasn't booting then i would look at this file. I know that some
people have talked about dist-upgrades and the UID and fstab not
matching. Ubuntu uses this Unique I D for it's partition table but it
can get pretty goosed, i tend to swap it to the partition table number,
so the last time i deleted the UID number which should look like this
UUID=4d47188f-df5c-4643-a003-1e572492fc15 and then swapped it for sda5.
Once you have a wee look at that fstab file it makes a bot more sense.
As i'm still unsure what the issues are i don't know if the above is
useful, or not. I'm betting that it isn't.
