Linux Systems Administrator/Database Developer
Scottish Crop Research Institute
Dundee £19,000 - £27,200
Administer and develop a robust and secure Unix/Linux service with the
Institute & develop database solutions with Institute staff. Setup
configuration and maintenance of the Linux cluster, migrating the Instutute's
exisitng Unix system to a Linux platform, liaising with staff regarding the
future role and implementation of Linux throughout the Institute. Provide
generic database development and support.
Setup & maintain infrastructue servers. Install and configure servers &
maintain user accounts, file & directory permissions. General network &
client connectivity troubleshooting, disk space managment, installation of
updates & software applications. Maintian a full codumentation of maintenance
policies, procedures and logs of all updates & configuration changes made.
install, update and maintiain software for Bionformatics to insure the
stability and secuirty of internal & external facing systems.
LINUX CLUSTER: Configue and update cluster management software. Install &
configure nodes.
Help develop bespoke applications for indentified user needs for database
solutions, identify external sources that could be accessed by SCRI eg honour,
Masters etc student projects, external research groups that can be approached
for more advanced projects that may attract external funding. Indentify
training needs and appropriate courses. Ensure that existing databases &
applications are operational & secure. Assist when supporting staff develop
database solutions and when dealing with outside contractors etc.
Knowledge: up to date working knowledge of Linux platform, DNS, DHCP,Samba,
Apache, SELinux & cluster technology, general database applications and advise
on future developments. Databases are likely to include MS as well as Linux
plantforms & knowledge of SQL is essential.
A minimum of 2 years post qualification working in an area of IT Systems
Administration. Working in Unix/Linux Technologies is essential with
experience of developing database solutions on at least one platform.
Invovlement in server administration & exposure to clustering technologies
would be advantageous.
BSc in Computing Systems or equivalent.
