Yes, not everyone can afford robotic tape jukebox's, however, disk makes
a cost effective backup medium.

This would be true for anyone. Of course you can do fancy things like
real-time'ish data replication and such...

Altogether connected to one machine I have ~1TB

This is not in any special configuration though. What I'd be looking at
is building an external SATA RAID array using eSATA connection.

1 x 4 port eSATA card, 
4 x 500GB SATA drives + 4 eSATA capable enclosures.

Put them into a software RAID 5, bingo 1.5TB at not a lot of money.

Offline... USB hard drive that's not always powered on.
