Hi everyone,

There is an opening for a work placement at the company I work for;
Calico Jack LTD. I've seen a lot of potential talent in the LUG and
the Abertay Linux Society and I feel that some of you may enjoy
working on a summer placement with us.

Feel free to forward the following Job Description to anyone who might
be interested:

This position will primarily be of interest to students, though
non-students may be considered.

Pay will be competitive with student placement rates.

Calico Jack LTD is a small Dundee based company with big ideas and are
pushing to develop next generation services (think Web meets
Telecoms). We have a history performing innovative research and
development with Telco's, ISP's and the NHS, and have developed a
range of technologies for communication, reasoning and distributed
systems.

The position will primarily involve Software Development but the
candidate (like all of our employees) will be expected to be proactive
in their contributions to other aspects of the business, such as:

- Meeting with customers
- The formation of project work plans
- The software architecture & design process
- Improving internal processes (e.g. development practices,
collaborative working etc)
- Looking at new areas of business

We have a small team of incredibly talented people working here; and I
personally can't think of a better way to learn about business and the
technology industry than by the frequent discussions you'll have with
our CEO, Dr Paul Sergeant.  Talking with our CTO, Dr Chris Reed;
you'll learn everything you want to know about Computer Science. And,
who knows, you might also be able to learn a thing or two from myself
and my other colleagues... But really, what we want is for you to
teach us!

We are currently involved in a number of interesting projects which
the candidate will be expected to participate in. One of which is
Internet Search related and makes use of Nutch (
http://lucene.apache.org/nutch/ ) the open source search engine hosted
under the umbrella of the Apache Software Foundation. It is likely
that the lucky candidate will be working with me on parts of this
project.

Because of our line of work, we use a wide variety of Open Source
technologies and there is always the opportunity (where appropriate)
for participation with the wider FLOSS communities. We have made
numerous small contributions to a number of projects, and it's likely
that in the coming months we will be working on making improvements to
important projects such as Nutch.

Passion, personal interest and a thirst for knowledge are WAY MORE
IMPORTANT TO US than being able to satisfy the following checklist but
having knowledge of any of the following will be handy:

- Basic Sys admin skills on Unix like OS's (preferably Linux)
- Knowledge of Software Security
- Experience with OOP (preferably in language like Java/C#/C++ or Ruby/Python)
- Knowledge of Web Development
- Knowledge of scripting languages (e.g. Ruby, Python, even Perl)
- Agile development methods
- Working in a team

I'd be surprised if you learnt anything more about us from our website
( http://calicojack.co.uk/ ), but you can try.

Obviously, if you get the position and you do a good job, there may be
future opportunities for you at Calico Jack LTD.

If you're interested please email me on:

rick at calicojack.co.uk

With a CV and a covering letter (no more than a page of A4) telling us:

- A little about yourself
- What relevant experience you have
- What your interests are
- How you can help us
- Why you're suitable for the job

Please send submissions in PDF or ODF (Open Office format).
