[dundee] Database front end - any ideas?

a wee bit of topic but
what do people use and what are the benefits of each 'language/app' for web
based application
i was inquiring in ruby on rails 2 years ago but got stranded, i get
javascript and xhtml but the benefits for ajax compared to jsp or even java
applet or even ruby that's where it stops. what is used for what? which
'language/app'  has what benefits?
