someone already replied along the same lines as this...).

There are no shortage of media player devices that can be hooked up to
a network and a TV. I've got a neuros OSD which does recording as well
but if you only want playback there are cheaper alternatives. A quick
search for "Network media player" turned up loads of options. The
Haupage 1004 looks like it might be what you want - though the
description worries me that it might just handle streams and not play
files off a file server. VLC can easilly make MPEG streams but you'd
need something to control it and it puts load on the machine serving
the content.
