Yes, I'm back. I've decided that I need to list the various types of *nix that
would suit and then select distros that match the categories. Suggestions for
the equivalents welcomed (e.g. Noobix = Ubuntu). I can't find where OpenSuse
fits anymore....
Noobix
Easy desktop distro for those users who want to try a *nix - that is, the
distro that you would give to someone to install and use without your help.
Stuff should work "out of the box" - e.g. video playing, music. Should be easy
to dual boot. Used to be Mandrake.
Busix
This must not Frighten the Horses (FtH) - to be used in non-enterprise offices
for the usual office tasks by both senior and junior staff. Should look a bit
like Windows (i.e. menus at the bottom) so most likely to be KDE. Should be
non-surprising and reasonably easy to support by non-IT people.
Serverix
Distro suitable for server use - e.g. as print server, web-server or whatever.
Probably installed and maintained by IT or a techie, so can (should) be
command-line driven.
Puntix
The next step up from Noobix, for converted users with a desire to "move up"
to a slightly more complex system.
Prodix
Distro suitable for building appliances. Should have updates controllable by
the user, etc. Easily configurable programmatically. Mustn't be easy to break
and is expected to run unattended for years. Should be upgradable-in-place.
Embeddix
Small distro suitable for embedded devices.
Gamix
Distro specialised for gaming, including Wine support, etc.
Wallix
Firewall-type distro.
Scholarix
For educational use - secondary level rather than primary-school level. Should
be able to be given to pupils for use at home, so should also support live-cd
use (with memory stick, say) so that the family PC can be used but not be
shredded. Should include a range of tools for various subjects (Chemistry,
English, IT - programming, etc.).
Beardix
Fully-fledged and technical distro. Might even need to be compiled from
source.
Moanix
A distro that will keep Robert quite as it does everything he wants from the
one distro! Also known Improbalix.
