I'm a pragmatist in many ways but this really annoyed,
This bit
...Management knew that we could not continue to be in business and provide
our intellectual properties for free. It is not an economically sound
decision....
had me chuckling.

Dear Helix3 Member,
For the past FIVE years Helix3 has been available to you for FREE. Drew
Fahey spent many hours developing, designing and assembling this very
useful and popular tool. During those five years e-fense, the company
behind Helix3, never asked for anything in return. When new management
came to e-fense, we recognized the opportunity to build this company into a
global competitor in the forensic security software business. This was
surely a community in love with the Helix3 tool. Which was very exciting
to us! We knew the software was used by people around the world; in police
departments investigating and solving crimes, by other government agencies
handling investigations, and in forensic service businesses handling
litigation cases. What an amazing story Helix3 has been!
Management knew that we could not continue to be in business and provide
our intellectual properties for free. It is not an economically sound
decision. We implemented the donation program hoping the Helix3 community,
who had benefited and prospered for five years, would give a little back -
return the favor so to speak. We were dismayed by the lack of support,
less then 5% of the Helix3 community provided a donation. A few donated
$100 or more and we were truly grateful to them; however that was not
enough to support software development.
Management then made the decision to move to a membership program. We
expected some protest but we know Helix3 is the best tool of its kind in
the world and that the community would understand that e-fense cannot run a
business or provide a software application without a reasonable return on
investment. Imagine government agencies not getting any funds from tax
payers, it just cannot be done.
The membership program is very reasonably priced so as to not take
advantage of the community but is intended to fund the development and
support of Helix3. For less then $15 per month you get Helix3, access to
forums, support from experts, educational white-papers and webinars and
Helix3 Pro (expected to be released in April). This is an unbelievable
value!
A recent article was written by John Sawyer for Information Week's
DarkReading expressing his opinion. John understands where we are going.
