I will make some further points, (well what could one expect from a 
slackware zealot?)
a) It can't be that bad as it is the oldest of the surviving GNU/Linux 
distributions, 
b) Even with the marketing that some other distributions put in Slackware 
is still rated in the top 11 most popular distributions, slightly ahead of 
Gentoo,
c) http://slackbuilds.org/ and http://www.linuxpackages.net/ will give you 
most of the extra applications you may need,
d) if you want to go down the Gentoo route there was someone on 
alt.os.linux.slackware, some years ago, who in order to get it optimised 
on his hardware, compiled it from the sources provided on the CD set, 
there's now a choice of CD's or DVD, but that does seem like too much hard 
work to me me!
