the installer does work better now!, however you've got no chance
of automating a install like this with the preseed stuff they give you.

I find the whole debian installer overly complex, poorly documented, and
one big hack to tell you  the truth.

You're often better off ALT-f2 ing to a console during setup and doing
it yourself, then switching back to the installer when done.  Or using
Ubuntu Server, where they've put a bit more effort into the installer.
