[dundee] Why is Everythin on Linux Such a Ball Ache?

Hi All,
I've been working on this for hours and have gotten nowhere. I have a Ubuntu
10.04 LTS server and I'm trying to install vsftpd on it - how hard could
that possibly be? Anyway I go here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/serverguide/C/ftp-server.html
and follow the instructions to the letter, but the server refused to let me
create directories or upload stuff via anonymous ftp. I've search the
Google-verse and seen loads of people with the same issue going back to 2005
and not a solution. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks!
Regards,
