For those of you that I have wittered to about what I consider the best book
for learning about TCP/IP (inculding how to build a shadow network underneath
an existing one*, using tcpdump, ngrep and ethereal/wireshark). It includes
examples for Windows and Linux along with how to set up "labs" (test
environments):-
MANSFIELD, Niall
Practical TCP/IP - Designing, using and troubleshooting TCP/IP networks on
Linux and Windows
Addison-Wesley
ISBN 0 201 75078 3
...and Yes, it does draw "Internet" in a cloud, but I forgive it utterly. My
apologies if this is already a course-book for some of you.
* or "Multiple networks on the same local wire" if you want to be more
professional - this allows you to build a test network without actually having
to build one. Anything beats pulling cable.
I'm thinking of donating a new copy to the Society, for them to award to a
member somehow (best talk from a new speaker?)...
