This article (you only need to read the first 4 paragraphs) makes for an 
interesting discussion:

Basically, you can have a lot of users, each of whom can have more than one 
profile. 

There can be (2^63)-1 [about 9.22 x 10^18] profiles in the single profile 
table. Given that the population of the earth is about 7 billion (7 x 10^9), 
I calculate that that allows 1,317,624,576 profiles per person on Earth 
(about a billion profiles each)

The article goes on to talk about how they 'scale out' (that is, "horizontally 
scale") Postgresql by splitting the data up into (hashed) parts in case they 
suddenly go viral.

I know my opinion on this approach (surprise!). What's yours?
