I did a quick google on "Kernel panic: Attempted to kill init! gentoo USB
Mass Storage" which results in the following thread:
http://www.mail-archive.com/gentoo-user@gentoo.org/msg16314.html and the
problem is solved in
http://www.mail-archive.com/gentoo-user@gentoo.org/msg16403.html so you
might solve this by compiling your kernel manually.  Confirms the general
suspicion that it isn't really a USB problem.
