If it was downloading things that you already thought you had then that
was because there was a new version available.

If packages break then they are usually either swiftly fixed by the
community or they are removed. Packages that no longer have upstream
developer support are generally unfavoured, particularly if they prove
to be troublesome to maintain.

And contrary to what you might think, I do actually use my machine. (-;
