I find mpd (www.musicpd.org) very handy for this. It can scan filenames, ID3
tags and ogg tags into its database. It runs as a system daemon supporting tcp
connections and you can get a variety of interfaces for it. Command line,
ncurses, GTK, QT, PHP etc.
