[Durham] kmail settings

I am using kmail 1.12.4 which has (or had) a download progress bar
in the bottom right corner. Instead I get a string of popup messages
stacked up on the bottom right of the window which say things like
"Checking account...", "Retrieving messages..." and so on.

These disappear after a second or two, but are very distracting:
a whole set pops up each time I change to a new folder.

I have searched all the settings and configure windows I can find,
but I can't find anything related to this! I even tried restoring kmailrc
from a backup, but that had no effect!

Any suggestions?
