[Durham] Slightly OT: temperamental power adaptor

Ah, OK, fair enough. Pity.

Are universal psus generally reliable? I ask as my brother had an
unofficial psu a few years ago, and whenever it was plugged into his
laptop it made an awful high-pitched squeal, and his laptop now does
that any time it's plugged into any adapter. Which sucks. And we
have the same model of laptop (Asus EEE 901), so I'm a little scared
of the same thing happening to mine.

Thanks for the advice, Richard.

I wondered whether it was overheating, but it runs quite cool. Anybody have any advice (other than the obvious "buy a new one")? Has anybody taken a power adapter apart to ensure any loose connections are resoldered? I'm slightly wary of doing that, having had a bad encounter with taking apart a PC power supply in the past (don't ask!), but if it's likely to be a case of a loose wire, I'd rather fix it than buy a whole new one.
